WE'RE GOING: WESTSIDE RENDEZVOUS BY KATSU NAITO AT PRINTED MATTER

Printed Matter is pleased to launch West Side Rendezvous, a new publication featuring the work of photographer Katsu Naito, from London-based Wild Life Press. Please join us for a signing and launch Friday, November 11, 6-8 PM. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Ave, at 22nd Street, New York.

The work collected in West Side Rendezvous offers a candid documentation of the transvestite and transsexual sex-workers who frequented New York’s Meatpacking District in the early 1990s. Shot primarily in medium format, the 45 black and white portraits represent one of the most honest and robust depictions of that time in New York history.

After the Meatpacking District lost many of its traditional businesses, the desolate area enjoyed its pre-gentrification heyday as a center for the city’s queer, BDSM, and club scenes, along with its share of drug dealing and prostitution. Katsu, who encountered and documented his subjects mostly in the early afternoon when slaughterhouses and taxi repair garages were closed for business, simply shot what he saw. The gorgeous portraits—sex-infused but also intimate— are devoid of nearly all activity beyond the subject at hand, figures set among shuttered gates, crumbling concrete and graffitied walls.

For the duration of the launch Printed Matter has 45 prints available for purchase, signed by the artist, and each unique. Photos measure 8 x 10 in. and retail for $500.00 each.
