the up and comers: katie gallagher

A GRADUATE OF THE RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN AND NOW BASED IN NEW YORK – KATIE GALLAGHER HAS BEEN AMONGST A WAVE OF NEW DESIGN TALENT IN NEW YORK AND NOW ONE OF OUR UP AND COMERS. AS SHE PUTS IT HERSELF: SHE WAS “”BORN BETWEEN A FARM AND A FOREST SOMEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES. WHEN [SHE] WAS YOUNG, [SHE] HATED WEARING CLOTHES, BUT ALWAYS WORE [HER] CAT THOMAS ON [HER] HEAD.” NOT BELIEVING THAT FASHION IS THE END-GOAL: INSTEAD, STORIES, PERSONALITIES, MOODS, IDEALS, AND ATTITUDES. WE HAD A CHANCE TO GET TO KNOW ABOUT A BIT ABOUT HER RECENTLY – SEE BELOW:

OAK: can you briefly introduce yourself?
Katie Gallagher: I’m Katie Gallagher. I’m a NYC-based fashion designer. I live and work in Chinatown.

OAK: what is the concept of your brand and why did you start it?
Patternmaking is the most important thing to me. Its where my focus and beliefs about successful, wearable pieces lie.

OAK: what, or when, was your first big break?
KG: I started getting a bunch of internet press as early as my junior year in school, I would say my Spring/Summer 2010 launch during New York Fashion week was my first significant event.

OAK: you’ve done several rad presentations in new york so far – do you happen to have a favorite one? any words on upcoming presentations?
KG: My latest, Spring/Summer 2011 show! I feel like that with each season everything comes together a little bit more than the last. That’s is the exciting part! It may even be little bits that no one other than me notice.

OAK: everyone was going crazy for the make-up and nails from your a/w 10 show, and rightfully so, can you comment on the beauty looks, and do you have any tips for our readers?
KG: With make-up, I always like to have a strong eye going on; it’s usually heavily lined in some way or
another. This brings it back to what I have been doing to myself since I was about 14 in terms of my own make-up and general look. Tips: you can never draw too many lines on the side of your face!

OAK: what’s your favorite piece from the line that we’re carrying? do you have any styling tips for that piece or others in the collection, for our readers?
KG: I love the Halo Hood. I wear them all the time in the winter. They look great as a layering piece with jackets and coats and can also be worn as a shawl in the fall when a jacket or coat isn’t quite necessary yet. I style them all sorts of ways on myself!

OAK: what are the challenges faced by up and coming designers in new york? does being in new york influence the direction of your line?
KG: The biggest challenge for me is getting the collection to serve as an income for me. I don’t require a lot! But I do have a load of student loans. I guess this all comes with being young. I don’t think New York
specifically influences my work. I like to stay pretty much in my own head. This way my concepts are pure and not tainted by too many disruptive things around me.

OAK: what’s next for you and the brand?
KG: Fall/Winter 2011 and a few new stores are in for SS11 delivery this coming winter!!
