Presented in conjunction with “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star” and IDEAS CITY 2013, artist Karen Finley’s interactive instillation Sext Me if You Can begins today at New Museum. Here’s how it works: participating patrons will receive a private cell phone number, which they will send their “sext” to in a one-on-one 10 minute sitting with the artist. Finley will then interpret their “sext” into a collectable work of art the sexter can take with them. OAK’s own Alicia Rae will be on hand this evening for coverage of the event, including the commission of her very own painting, which we will display right here on the OAK blog early next week. If you’re in New York, make sure to check out Karen Finley’s ‘Sext Me If You Can’ starting today at New Museum.

Karen Finley is a performance artist and painter who often incorporates themes of sexuality, abuse, and disenfranchisement into her work. The transgressive artist studied at the San Fransisco Art Institute before relocating to New York. Her performances have taken her to Lincoln Center, London’s ICA, Harvard, and The Bobino in Paris, where her work is also on display at the Pompidu. Currently, Finley is an art professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
