OFF THE WALL: JEAN PAUL GAULTIER AT BROOKLYN MUSEUM

SAMSUNG CSC

With Halloween less than a week away, it seems appropriate that Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opened today at Brooklyn Museum. After all, JPG has outfitted tours, music videos and performances for pop icons like Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Kurt Cobain, Beth Ditto, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and countless others. But while the designer may be known to many for his work in costume, his visionary collections are wearable works of art that have set trends and broken barriers since the 1970s. Over the past forty years his pieces have continued to challenge industry and societal conventions when it comes to size, shape, sexuality and gender. From talking and singing mannequins – including one of Gaultier himself – to an up-close look at his “Countryside Babes,” “Mermaids,” “Flower Power and Skinheads,” and “Punk Cancan” (to name a few) collections, the retrospective also highlights the diversity of the designer’s intricately detailed and groundbreaking work.
