For today’s OAK Spring Anthem, we’re taking it way back to 1977 with “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Rumored to be based on the true story of a young girl jumping to her death, Tom Petty refuted these claims in the book Conversations with Tom Petty stating that the song was actually inspired by cars driving down the highway he lived next to in Encino, California, which reminded him of the sound of the ocean. Interestingly enough, even though “American Girl” remains a TPaTH classic to this day, it failed to chart in the US upon its original ’77 release.
