OAK SPRING ANTHEM: TLC “DIGGIN’ ON YOU”

You’d be hard pressed to find someone in the 25-40 age bracket who never owned a copy of TLC’s CrazySexyCool. It was an album that spanned genre, and gender, from a trio of women – Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Lisa ‘Left-Eye’ Lopes, and Rozanda ‘Chilli’ Thomas – who defied stereotypes, broke new ground for both girl groups and R & B alike, and brought depth to their music with social and political lyrics that warned youngsters of the dangers of unprotected sex, drug abuse, and domestic violence. In fact, TLC’s influence on music, style, and social issues is still fulfilling its true potential, as new generations begin to discover their unique sound and fashion sense in an era when the mid-1990s are having a major resurgence on music and style inspiration. That being said, we also love how much fun TLC always seemed to be having while they were doing it all. One of the best examples (outside of archive video footage of their live shows and their unpredictable interviews) is their 1995 single “Diggin’ On You” from the aforementioned CrazySexyCool. Taking place on a warm afternoon, the song’s all about crushes, Kool-aid, and hanging out with your friends — the perfect combination for a hot Spring day like today.
