OAK MOVIE NIGHT: HACKERS

HACKERSBLOG

Relive the mid-90s greatness of Angelina Jolie’s pixie haircut (cyberpunk’s answer to “The Rachel”), Jonny Lee Miller’s wallet chain, Matthew Lillard’s pigtails (is it just us, or was this guy in just about every movie from the decade?), and of course the roller blades (oh, the roller blades!) at OAK Movie Night: Hackers. It was an era of pay phones and dial-up, icy eye shadow and Quicksilver logo everything, and it was awesome. While we’re currently living in an age when irony begs the question “if you’re not online, do you really exist?”, we’re taking it back to the uncharted waters of the early Internet with a crew of tech-savvy teenagers, whose main hobby is exploring cyber space, and playing virtual pranks. While it may all seem like a distant memory, it’s hard to believe that less than 20 years ago, not many of us relied on the Internet on a daily basis.

While we now more or less know our way around the Internet, spend our free time checking our Instagram feeds, and there is a certain rollerblade-lessness in 2013, join us as we take it back to the beginning of the shift towards the modern Internet era. It was a time when you could hack your high school’s sprinkler system, and re-wire NYC’s traffic lights, but you still had a flying toaster screensaver, and bought the movie soundtrack at The Virgin Megastore.
