last night: flying lotus/brainfeeder showcase at le poisson rouge

Thank goodness for twitter because otherwise I wouldn’t have found out about the last-minute concert thrown together with Flying Lotus and his label Brainfeeder’s excellent roster – they’ve been in town for shows at the Bowery Ballroom, and then they have one more show tonight at the Music Hall of Williamsburg (which btw there will be some excellent special guests at MHOW, we learned, but can’t say). It was kind of an epic evening (you’ll have to excuse the poor image quality of the pics – blame my phone)- John from OAK Bond st. rolled through and I also saw one of our favorite Blackout bartenders, Luke, with their respective friends. By the time I got there there was already a line around the corner (about 1.5K people rsvp’d for the show, since it was, well, free), and managed to finagle my way in as soon as the doors opened.

The night started off with Austin Peralta, Mike Slott, and Teebs, then developed into a live Jazz Show (Ravi Coltrane made an appearance) – there were a lot of seemingly disparate elements but in the context of Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder it all made sense. Flying Lotus brought it all together at the end with a thrilling performance with selections from his discography, a little bit of hip-hop, live versions of his songs with a backing band, and even Mark Morrison’s ‘return of the mack.’

It was an intense night, and reminded me of Daft Punk’s alive – it’s as if no one is better at playing and mixing their songs than themselves. Anyway, it was really good. Catch him tonight if you can – it doesn’t seem like they’re in NY all that often.
