INTERVIEW: ‘PSYCHOS’ AUTHOR TANNER COHEN

unnamed-2
Brooklyn-based writer and actor Tanner Cohen is about to release Psychos, a sequel to the New York Times best-seller White Girl Problems, which follows the trials and tribulations of shopping addict Babe Walker. We recently stopped by Tanner’s Greenpoint, BK apartment to shoot him in some of our favorite SS14 arrivals and talk about Psychos.

OAK: At the beginning of Psychos, Babe is fresh out of rehab for a shopping addiction. What’s next for our hero?
TANNER COHEN: That’s right. She’s still battling a lot of her demons when we meet up with her again at the beginning of Psychos. The book follows her navigating her way through finding inner peace, finding love, relapsing and shopping a shitload, and doing a lot of fun drugs along the way.

OAK: What sort of advice might she offer to any shopping addicts (self included) reading this interview?
TC: She’d probably slap me and tell me to keep shopping and love myself.

OAK: I see on her blog that Babe just got back from Coachella. Any highlights?
TC: Not really. She wanted to run in to Leo DiCaprio but she went on the wrong weekend, so the whole trip was kind of a bust tbh. Supposedly The Knife were really good though, but like, obviously.

OAK: As a writer, what did you personally take away from this project after it was completed?
TC: It’s funny. As much as this is a writing project — the whole White Girl Problems/Babe Walker experiment — it’s also been like an acting job. In that I’m getting the chance to play a character and really get inside of her brain, learn about her friends and family, etc. So, I’d say the performance of it all has been the most rewarding take-away.

OAK: What do you hope readers will get out of Psychos?
TC: Herpes. That’s a joke, Babe doesn’t have herpes. I hope it makes people laugh.

OAK: What other projects are you working on now?
TC: I’m about to finish a novel that I’m writing with my brother, called Dirty Rush, which is about a sorority. Unfortunately, Babe’s not involved.

OAK: What are you most looking forward to about summer?
TC: I feel like salads are better in the summer because produce is fresher. So, lettuce? Is that annoying?

OAK: Not at all. Salads are great. What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
TC: I’ve actually never felt embarrassed in my life. But I hear it sucks. Just kidding, one time I pooped my pants on the L. Just kidding. Or am I?

OAK: What are your favorite bars/restaurants in Greenpoint?
TC: I eat tacos at Calexico a lot and I drink at The Call Box Lounge a lot.

OAK: What’s one thing you regret in your life?
TC: Not seeing Miley Cyrus when The Bangerz Tour came through NYC.

OAK: If you could be on any reality TV show what would it be?
TC: I know this isn’t really what you’re asking, but one of my life goals is to be a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drage Race.

OAK: Who is your ultimate celebrity crush?
TC: Female: Tilda Swinton. Male: Tilda Swinton.

Psychos: A White Girl Problems Book will be released on April 29, 2014 from Simon + Schuster.
