We recently invited the Grungy Gentleman to our studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for a photoshoot and had a chance to ask him a few questions. We styled him with a mix of modern and classic menswear from a range of our men’s offerings including Oak, Acne, Band of Outsiders, Gant, T by Alexander Wang, and Caminando. Check the looks and read through to get to know Jace Lipstein, the Grungy Gentleman himself.

Oak: Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Grungy Gentleman: My name is Jace. I talk about clothes and stuff.

Oak: When and why did you start your blog?

GG: On my birthday, I went to Barneys to pick out a new outfit for an all-black theme party. I was in the Rag & Bone pop-up shop section of Barneys and I asked a gentleman, who turned out to be the Director of Sales for Rag & Bone, something along the lines of getting a black and white gingham shirt. He told me that he didn’t work at Barneys, he actually worked for Rag & Bone, so I casually started telling him how much I loved the line. He pointed to another guy and said, “Well you can just tell the designer right there.” I ended up speaking with David Neville (co-founder and designer of Rag & Bone) for about 30 minutes and he was very receptive to my thoughts and ideas. Later that day, I reflected on what happened and thought, maybe I really should be following my passion for men’s fashion.

OAK: What are your favorite brands that we carry?

GG: ACNE, Band of Outsiders, GANT Rugger, and T by Alexander Wang.

OAK: Any styling tips for our readers?

GG: I had the honor of speaking with Simon Spurr a month or so back. He said something to me that I totally agree with. “I’ve always been more about style than fashion trend. What works for me, might not work for someone else. Identifying your own style is the key factor. Be known for something, be consistent, but make sure you tweak your style every 6 months or so.” So in short, dress for yourself and embrace your own style. As for seasonal wear, I always ditch my socks around April when the weather breaks. You can never go wrong when you rock a navy blazer with gold buttons. Invest in a trench.

OAK: What’s next for you?

GG: I have always dreamed of working at GQ. There is an aura and an excellence that ‘THE magazine’ possesses. It would be amazing to surround myself and work with such incredible talent. So hopefully soon, I can end up on that path. As for the near future, look out for some totally rad collaborations dropping with Creative Recreation, Olasul, J Shoes, Kiel James Patrick, and more…
