get to know: lyz olko from obesity and speed.

We recently had a chance to ask one of the designers behind NY cult label Obesity and Speed (pictured right, with co-designer Josh Conner) a few questions, in preparation for party together next week at Oak Bond St (info below). Get to know a little bit more about herself and the story behind the brand and the inspiration behind s/s 11. Read through below.

Oak: Can you introduce yourself and explain what you do in Obesity and Speed?

Lyz Olko: hello, my name is lyz olko and i am one half of the design team that is obesity and speed. i have a partner who is my best friend josh.

O: Your line is still very graphic-driven, but we really like how the printed fabrics have evolved in the past few seasons. Can you elaborate?

LO:thanks so much!! our line started with one hand sewn sweatshirt with the misfits skull graphic rendered in a lace applique to silk screened graphic tees, sweats and accessories….we used to hand screen the repeating patterns little graphic by little graphic….like this one bat pattern we used to do. i see the printed fabrics as an evolution of the original single and double graphic tees,,,,the printed fabrics have a more sophisticated feel to them which is great, it reaches a wider audience of people who might like the other pieces, but arent as comfortable with wearing a choose death tee to work but love the all the prints. the printed fabric pieces are a nice complement to the edgier items too. we now use fabrics like chiffon, cupro and silks and lace……..

O: What’s your favorite piece from the spring collection?

LO:probably the studded shorts and vests.

O: What can we look forward to next season from Obesity and Speed?

LO:the fall collection is entitled ” hope for the hopeless” see online: www.obesityandspeed.com

O: What’s your favorite story about (Obesity and Speed co-designer) Josh?

LO: I have a lot of favorite stories about him…..but the some of the best times weve had are when we first met, and we were super super broke and it was the summer, and we’d hang out after work every night going to the gym then roaming the streets, hanging out at tower and kim’s video for hours checking out records and horror movies then sit on a stoop somewhere drinking iced coffee talking. we would rent a movie or two each, go home and watch them, then switch them when we saw each other the next day so we could talk about them. eventually we moved in together so we could work and watch movies together all the time.

O: Finally, what are you looking forward to most about our party together this Thursday?

LO: we are so happy to celebrate with all of our friends and everyone at oak, one of our favorite stores!!!! we want to celebrate the spring collection and the arrival of spring!

Make sure to come by this Thursday to Oak Bond St. for our party together!
