sandy kim: youth in revolt

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

sandy kim, a san fransisco photo icon, captures the dirty, glamorous and downright recognizable imagery of the american carefree hipster youth. expressions of a counter culture evident in her work invoke our own personal memories of dirty basement rock shows and sober teenage make-out sessions with faded skateboarders (when white belts and fringed fashion mullets where at the height of cool)…memories to last a lifetime.

dead flowers closing performances

Monday, June 28th, 2010

last week at participant inc. was the closing of several exhibitions, marked by performances from Johanna Constantine, Breyer P-Orridge, and Marti Domination & Beaut.

Johanna Constantine, artistic partner to Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons), started off the first performance. emerging from behind the stage covered in veils, she stripped them away to reveal her body painted in black and red, and proceeded to balance on conical/almost bone-like structures that she waved up and down, mesmerizing the audience.

The artist BREYER P-ORRIDGE performed their interdimensional PANDROGENY RANT featuring Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge & Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Lady Jaye appeared courtesy of the immaterial void and Genesis of the material dimension. They ranted and raved on the disintegration of identity, the fading state of arbitrary gender and the urgency of a transcendental cadre of transexuality and the conscious use cut-up creation as a tool for releasing a THIRD BEING, the Pandrogyne, as a symbol of our survival as a species unified by a strategy of Unity of purpose and inclusivity.

the final performance, by marti domination (marti was also a member of the blacklips performance troupe) doubled as a performance from her band beaut.

check out the pics from the performances and exhibitions, and be sure to stay tuned for the next issue of the oakazine which features an interview with participant founder Lia Gangitano.
